How to Build a Simple Korean Skincare Routine

Korean skincare is popular around the world because of its focus on hydration, layering, and healthy skin maintenance.
Many people think it is complicated, but a simple routine is actually very easy to follow.

1. Cleanser

Cleansing is the first and most important step in any skincare routine.
It removes dirt, oil, and makeup from the skin.

In the morning, a gentle gel-type cleanser is usually enough to lightly refresh the skin without over-stripping it.

In the evening, a double cleansing method is often recommended to thoroughly remove sunscreen, impurities, and makeup.
This usually involves an oil-based cleanser followed by a foam or water-based cleanser.

From my personal experience in my 40s and having tried many different products and routines since my 20s, skincare results can vary depending on skin type, but consistency is the most important factor.

It is important to gently massage the cleanser in circular motions, focusing on soft foam rolling over the skin rather than harsh rubbing.

After cleansing, rinsing thoroughly with water is also very important to ensure no residue is left on the skin.

2. Toner

Toner helps balance the skin after cleansing and prepares it for better absorption of skincare products.

One effective way to apply toner is by soaking a cotton pad and placing it between your fingers, then gently sweeping it along the skin texture.

Start from the inner cheeks and move outward toward the edges of the face.

For the forehead, gently sweep upward from bottom to top.

Around the lips, move in soft circular motions.

After finishing the entire face, gently glide from the chin down to the neck to complete the application.

This method helps the product absorb evenly while also smoothing the skin’s texture without irritation.

3. Serum

Serum is used to target specific skin concerns depending on your skin’s needs.

There are many types of serums designed for different purposes such as brightening, hydration, anti-aging, wrinkle care, and collagen support.

Choosing a serum that matches your skin concern is important for better results.

However, a hydrating serum is generally beneficial for everyone, regardless of skin type, as it helps maintain moisture balance in the skin.

Serum should be applied in a small amount and gently pressed into the skin for better absorption.

4. Moisturizer

After applying serum, moisturizer helps lock in all the active ingredients and “seal” them into the skin.

It also plays an important role in keeping the skin hydrated and strengthening the skin barrier.

Just like serum, using the right amount of moisturizer is very important.
Using too little may reduce its effectiveness, while using too much can feel heavy and put unnecessary stress on the skin.

Apply it evenly over the entire face until the skin feels comfortably hydrated and well-covered.

At the final step, gently pat the skin with your fingertips to help absorption and finish the routine.

5. Sunscreen

Many people struggle with how much sunscreen to apply, especially since it is often difficult to estimate the correct amount.

In Korea, it is commonly suggested to apply about the size of a coin.
In the United States, a similar guideline is often described as a quarter-sized amount.

If you have a larger face, it is recommended to apply slightly more than that amount to ensure full coverage.

Since sunscreen only works effectively when enough product is applied, it is better to use a generous amount rather than too little.

After applying sunscreen, whether you wear makeup or not, finishing with a light powder or powder-based product can help extend its effectiveness throughout the day.

When the skin becomes too oily, sweat and dust can easily break down the sunscreen layer and reduce its protection.

Although reapplying sunscreen every 2–3 hours is ideal, it is not always practical in daily life.

Therefore, it is best to apply a sufficient amount in the morning and set it with a light powder finish to help maintain longer-lasting protection.

Final Note

A simple skincare routine does not need many products.
Consistency is more important than complexity.

Cleansing, hydrating, moisturizing, and protecting your skin daily is enough to maintain healthy skin over time.
