How to Make Your Korean Answers Longer and More Natural
When you are learning Korean, it is common to answer a question with just one short sentence.
For example:
Q: 주말에 뭐 했어요?
What did you do over the weekend?
A: 집에서 쉬었어요.
I rested at home.
This answer is correct. But if you want to have a more natural conversation, try adding one or two simple details.
You do not need to use difficult grammar or long sentences. You can make your answer longer by adding information about when, where, who, why, or how you felt.
1. Add a reason
Start with your main answer and explain why.
집에서 쉬었어요. 피곤했어요.
I rested at home. I was tired.
You can also connect the two ideas with –아서/어서:
피곤해서 집에서 쉬었어요.
I was tired, so I rested at home.
Another example:
Q: 왜 한국어를 공부해요?
Why do you study Korean?
Short answer:
한국 드라마를 좋아해요.
I like Korean dramas.
Longer answer:
한국 드라마를 좋아해서 한국어를 공부해요.
I study Korean because I like Korean dramas.
2. Add when or where
A simple time or place can make your answer more complete.
Q: 어제 뭐 했어요?
What did you do yesterday?
Short answer:
친구를 만났어요.
I met a friend.
Longer answer:
어제 오후에 카페에서 친구를 만났어요.
I met a friend at a café yesterday afternoon.
You can add:
- 어제 — yesterday
- 오늘 아침에 — this morning
- 주말에 — on the weekend
- 집에서 — at home
- 카페에서 — at a café
- 회사에서 — at work
3. Add who you were with
Mentioning another person makes your answer sound more conversational.
Q: 주말에 어디에 갔어요?
Where did you go over the weekend?
Short answer:
영화관에 갔어요.
I went to the movie theater.
Longer answer:
주말에 친구하고 영화관에 갔어요.
I went to the movie theater with a friend over the weekend.
You may hear both 하고 and 같이 in everyday conversation:
친구하고 같이 영화관에 갔어요.
I went to the movie theater with a friend.
4. Add how you felt
Talking about your feelings is an easy way to continue the conversation.
Q: 여행이 어땠어요?
How was your trip?
Short answer:
좋았어요.
It was good.
Longer answer:
날씨가 좋았고 음식도 맛있었어요. 정말 즐거웠어요.
The weather was nice, and the food was delicious. I had a really good time.
Here are some useful expressions:
- 재미있었어요. — It was fun.
- 즐거웠어요. — I had a good time.
- 조금 피곤했어요. — I was a little tired.
- 정말 좋았어요. — It was really nice.
- 생각보다 어려웠어요. — It was harder than I expected.
5. Add one more related sentence
You do not always need to connect everything into one long sentence. Beginners can simply add another short sentence.
Q: 어떤 음식을 좋아해요?
What kind of food do you like?
Short answer:
한국 음식을 좋아해요.
I like Korean food.
Longer answer:
한국 음식을 좋아해요. 특히 비빔밥을 자주 먹어요. 매운 음식도 좋아해요.
I like Korean food. I especially eat bibimbap often. I also like spicy food.
This is an easy and natural way to speak more without worrying about complicated grammar.
A Simple Answer Formula
When you practice speaking, try using this pattern:
Main answer + one detail + one feeling or reason
For example:
Q: 요즘 운동을 해요?
Do you exercise these days?
Main answer:
네, 운동해요.
Yes, I exercise.
Add a detail:
일주일에 두 번 헬스장에 가요.
I go to the gym twice a week.
Add a reason or feeling:
운동하고 나면 기분이 좋아요.
I feel good after exercising.
Complete answer:
네, 운동해요. 일주일에 두 번 헬스장에 가요. 운동하고 나면 기분이 좋아요.
Yes, I exercise. I go to the gym twice a week. I feel good after exercising.
Try It Yourself
Answer this question:
Q: 지난 주말에 뭐 했어요?
What did you do last weekend?
Start with a short answer:
지난 주말에 ____________.
Now add:
- Where were you?
- Who were you with?
- Why did you do it?
- How did you feel?
Your answer does not need to be perfect. Begin with one sentence, then add just one more detail. As you practice, your Korean answers will gradually become longer and more natural.
